6:30 pm Join Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and Center for Architecture Science and Ecology at their offices for drinks, informal conversation, and a behind the scenes look at recent and upcoming projects. This program is part of First Friday, a monthly opportunity for League members to visit the offices of leading design practices to see work on the boards and learn more about the offices’ organization and design processes. These informal social gatherings feature happy hour drinks arranged by the host office. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) is a global architecture, interior design, engineering, and urban-planning firm. Since its founding 75 year ago, SOM has been a leader in the research and development of specialized technologies, new processes, and innovative ideas. The firm’s leadership in design and building technology has been honored with more than 1,700 awards including two American Institute of Architects Architecture Firm Awards—in 1962 and again in 1996. The firm maintains offices in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., London, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Mumbai, and Abu Dhabi. SOM’s New York office has a wide variety of projects currently underway in the city—including One World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan, which will be the tallest building in North America, P.S. 62 on Staten Island, which will be the first Net Zero Energy school in New York State, and the Baccarat Hotel & Residences in Midtown, a mixed-use project that incorporates a public library facility. SOM New York’s international portfolio includes projects under construction in South Korea, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain. The Center for Architecture, Science & Ecology (CASE), a collaboration between SOM and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, engages scientists, engineers, and architects from the professional and academic worlds toward a common goal of redefining how to build sustainable cities and environments. Recent projects include the ”Active Modular Phytoremediation Wall System,” a green wall system that can effectively reduce airborne pollution while saving energy by maximizing a plant’s capacity to clean the air, thus reducing the need for outside fresh air in buildings. Tickets First Friday events are free and open only to League members, who may bring one non-member guest. RSVP required to {encode="[email protected]" title="[email protected]"}.
