More than just a beacon of innovation in green building design, the new Bullitt Center, currently under construction, will set the bar for building standards in the future by becoming the greenest commercial building in the world. It embodies not just one environmental concern but numerous values of sustainability. It shows how foundations can take risks, demonstrate the possible, and catalyze change with investments. It also has been a phenomenal learning experience, with information and lessons to share with colleagues. Buildings account for about 40 percent of total energy consumption in the U.S. Materials used for their construction are most often sourced for cost and convenience and usually contain notoriously toxic chemicals that affect human and ecosystem health. Yet, the new Bullitt Center in Seattle has endeavored to meet the ambitious goals of the Living Building Challenge, the world’s most strenuous performance standards for sustainable building. The Center will generate its own electricity, treat its own wastewater on site, and incorporate many other cutting edge and environmentally sound design and construction features.
