Definitions Series: Risk April 8, 2014 7pm Storefront invites you to join us for Definitions Series: Risk with Thom Mayne, Eric Owen Moss, Stephen Phillips, and Eva Franch for a discussion on the “institutionalization” of “experimentation” and cultural politics and power of TAKING RISKS. About the participants: Thom Mayne Thom Mayne founded Morphosis as an interdisciplinary, collective practice involved in experimental design and research in 1972. He is co-founder of the Southern California Institute of Architecture and Distinguished Professor at UCLA Architecture and Urban Design. Mayne's distinguished honors include the Pritzker Prize (2005) and the AIA Gold Medal (2013). Eric Owen Moss Eric Moss, FAIA, received a Bachelor of Arts from UCLA in 1965, his Masters of Architecture from UC Berkeley in 1968 and a second Masters of Architecture from Harvard in 1972. EOMA has been the recipient of over 100 local, national, and international design awards. Eric Owen Moss has held teaching positions at major universities around the world including Harvard, Yale, Columbia, University of Applied Arts in Vienna, and the Royal Academy in Copenhagen. Moss has been a longtime professor at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc), and has served as its director since 2003. Stephen Phillips Stephen Phillips, AIA, Ph.D. is Associate Professor and Director of the Cal Poly Los Angeles Metropolitan Program in Architecture and Urban Design, and Visiting Faculty at SCI-Arc. He is Principal in the award-wining firm Stephen Phillips Architects (SPARCHS). As a graduate of Yale, Penn, and Princeton, he has received fellowships, grants, and awards from the Getty Research Institute, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Graham Foundation, the Bruno Zevi Foundation, the Canadian Center for Architecture, the AIA, and the ACSA, among others. He is author of Studio Ambition, Research Practice Symposium, "Toward a Research Practice: Frederick Kiesler's Design-Correlation Laboratory" in Grey Room 38 (MIT Press), "Plastics" in Cold War Hothouses (Princeton Architectural Press), and "Architecture Industry: The L.A. Ten" in Overdrive: L.A. Constructs the Future, 1940-1990 (Getty Research Institute). Eva Franch i Gilabert Eva Franch i Gilabert is the Executive Director and Chief Curator of Storefront for Art and Architecture since 2010. Prior to joining Storefront, Franch was an artist in residence at Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart, and directed the Masters Thesis studio at Rice University School of Architecture while practicing and building as an architect in Catalonia with her solo practice OOAA (Office Of Architectural Affairs). She studied at TU Delft and earned an M. Arch from ETSA Barcelona-UPC, and an M. Arch. II from Princeton University. In 2005 Franch was awarded La Caixa Fellowship for Postgraduate Studies, in 2008 the Peter Reyner Banham Fellow at SUNY Buffalo and in 2009 the Wortham Fellow at Rice University. She has lectured internationally on art, architecture and the importance of alternative practices in the construction and understanding of public life. About the book: L.A. Ten, emerged to define the future of Los Angeles architecture. In the new book L.A. [Ten]: Interviews on Los Angeles Architecture 1970s-1990s by author/editor Stephen Phillips of the Cal Poly L.A. Metro Program—architects Neil Denari, Frederick Fisher, Ming Fung, Craig Hodgetts, Coy Howard, Wes Jones, Thom Mayne, Eric Owen Moss, Michael Rotondi, and former associates of the late Franklin Israel offer a casual, witty, and approachable retrospective on the characters, environment, and cultural history of L.A. architecture as they remember it.
