Workshopping New York: Changing Spaces A Symposium with Exhibitors and Curators of Workshopping, the U.S. Pavilion at the 2010 Venice Architecture Biennale Jonathan D. Solomon; Michael Sorkin; Hilary Sample and Michael Meredith; and Guy Nordenson, Catherine Seavitt, Adam Yarinsky, Stephen Cassell, and Anthony Fontenot Moderated by Eva Franch 1.5 CEUs One in a series of “workshops” organized by curators 306090 and the High Museum of Art as responses to Workshopping, the U.S. Pavilion at the 2010 Venice Architecture Biennale, Workshopping New York: Changing Spaces addresses the future of public space in a city with changing needs. Workshopping proposes that conversations between different models and scales of practice and different approaches to activism in the city can generate new and productive conversation. Workshopping New York: Changing Spaces will feature presentations and discussion by exhibitors and curators of the U.S. Pavilion. Speakers will include Jonathan D Solomon (co-curator of Workshopping); Michael Sorkin (Terreform); Hilary Sample and Michael Meredith (MOS); and Guy Nordenson, Catherine Seavitt, Adam Yarinsky, Stephen Cassell, and Anthony Fontenot. The evening will be moderated by Eva Franch, Director of the Storefront for Art and Architecture. Presentations will include projects exhibited by the three teams: Terreform’s New York City (Steady) State; MOS’s Instant Untitled; and Nordenson, Seavitt, Yarinsky, Cassell and Fontenot’s Palisade Bay New York and The Mississippi Delta: Constructing with Water; as well as a presentation of Workshopping in the context of the Venice Biennale by Solomon. Specific topics for discussion will include the role of the architect in shaping public space in the city; the possibilities for joining public works with public space; and the specific question of New York’s responses to changing access to resources and changing environmental and social conditions in the 21st century.
