In a time plagued by economic crisis, modern warfare, and global suffrage, it’s hard to consider anything outside of society’s present concerns. In a place stricken by poverty, hate crimes, and overwhelmed by shattered dreams and seemingly impossible-to-overcome obstacles, feelings of “love,” “healing,” and “desire” are somewhat obsolete. While the shadows of these problems may be an indication of the pain felt by millions of people across the world, the life of just one man offered enough hope to shine through to the masses.…

For some reason this website wants me to vote for you again! I have double guessed myself after reading such enthusiastic comments. This project is not banal and I said it before, the design is interesting. It could be a piece of art inspired to MJ, yes it could. The question really is, could it be a monument, that anyone, me for instance, as a fan, can I relate to? No. For me MJ just simply wasn't made out of that. Your project lacks the joy, the light, and the magic that he was. It's touchy in a way that is depressing. This is my personal opinion though, and I wish you the best luck. I give you 2 stars, which combined with the 4 I gave you before, it's still more than you gave me (2) without the effort of an explanation. And it's not like you lack in sensibility and verbosity...

What grounded Michael as an individual was definitely his willingness to reach out to others. This architecture definitely embodies that essence. I also like how the design is conceivable and at a scale that humankind can relate too unlike some of the others. molto bene cara!

I love the design! You can see the energy and playfulness come through even in respectful B&W. This is a place people of all generations can appreciate.

You have successfully captured in abstraction the scope of Michael's influence and affect on the world. He attempted to live in a world untouched by these modern crises and put his faith in the good of humanity. This space has the potential to transcend these worldly concerns and connect visitors to their humanity through interactions with each other. This is a thoughtful and powerful design that honors not only the King of Pop but the people he sought to inspire.

This design is truly exquisite! It is simple yet abstract and your description is much deeper than the surface portrays at first glance. I like how you incorporated the many other things, not only MJ, but the rest of the world was dealing with when he passed. With all the different aspects incorporated it will help us remember exactly how we felt on that tragic day. Like your design illustrates as well as your description, MJ did not have it easy and we all know about how he struggled, but still he will always live on as a legend.

I appreciate the simplicity and symbolism of this design. MJ moved through the world as only he could ~ this sculpture honors his foot print.

Visually, i personally like the geometrics in this entry: the circle, pentagon, trapazoids, right triangles, isosceles triangles, etc., which are rendered delicately in the sculpture itself, but in contrast with the more bulky geometric shapes of the buildings behind it. The message is very sensitive, and illustrates a thoughtful, global and humanistic sentiment, all of which resonate in Michael Jackson's lyrics.

Heel of a person, heal the world....and out of this comes Heel the World. This sculpture intimates humanity becoming, ascending from its own depths...from its walking base, its feet, wherever those feet might be, in whatever city in the world, from whatever part, or corner of that city, the movement is upward and outward, the arms outstretched, to global reach, and perhaps beyond, but the base of this human thrust is always the heel, my heel, your heel, Michael Jackson;s heel, wherever our heels are, in whatever life circumstances, those life circumstances can become transformative, as with Michael Jackson, toward healing of who I am, who you are, who and what all the world's people are. Set in the Los Angeles urban midst, this memorial to and of the essence of Michael Jackson, opens one's eyes to see the beauty of the human soul in every shadow, in every light, whatever shade, to hear the music of each person, and to connect together wherever we find ourselves...to create the greater good for me, for you, for the world.

There is no doubt that Michael Jackson had a positive impact on the world. He was a fabulous entertainer, possibly the best however he was a human as the rest of us. He was not bigger than life, in fact his death was a tragedy and his passing reflects that he was imperfect. This work of art is unique in that it reflects him as one of us, a common man.

I like this because of it's simplicity. Simplicity has impact; not glitter which is merely a distraction. I work for human services which endeavors to heal people The monument symbolizes Michael Jackson, his music, against the urban landscape.

I think I agree with previous comments, the description is great but I can't give a high score. The design doesn't reflect the words.

This design is subtle but dynamic. The star stage both grounds the piece, a star among us mortals, and suggests Michael Jackson's place in the firmament of superstars and the heavens. The radiating arms are full of energy, as MJ was, and allude to the many facets of his nature, his talent, his life, as well as the highs and lows of this conflicted human being. The centerpiece brilliantly captures his famous high-on-his-heels dance stance. The flowing water conveys healing. The piece is thoughtful but playful. This is a memorial that embraces people and invites the viewer into the superstar's world of music and dance and ever-reaching for the heights.

This design is unique amongst the entries, like Jackson was in life. It invites you in, but does not yield an obvious destination. I find that fitting somehow. Nice words from the designer as well.

while the written message is a valid response the design is too literal to do mj's life justice. hollywood walk of star extruded with a wind sculpture on top seems too plebeian for mj. this looks like many struggling public art installations in american cities...not progressive enough to memorialize an international music sensation let alone allow "hope to shine through to the masses". perhaps a warm place to eat lunch alone on a break from a sad office job but not a memorial grand enough for mj.

The writing is beautiful. But I'm not sure if the entry matches what your intent was in your words. If this was based on writing alone, you would have received a 10. Sorry.

I really appreciate the monochromatic material palette, which definitely represents the equality in life that Michael promoted. I also enjoy the title, and think that it, as well as the design are emblematic of the message he was trying to deliver in the song "Heal the World."

hile the abstract is not empirically clear at first, like snow falling, the aesthetics become pure and white as the idea accumulates, and then like his life, becomes gray. MJ's heel rises to a pointed toe onto the ghetto as if he is guiding all of us beyond to a "better place for you and for me" . This performance/idea rises to an even higher pardigm as his arms, shoulders and head remain abstract onto a world supported by a "people's infrastructure" of caring; and for those of us who wonder whether he is black or white (gray back drop); whether he is an enigma or a constant (colors of white, black and grayed confusion within) ; whether he is here, there or "living forever" memorialized in a collecive purpose for both you and I. MJ is clearly human in this design. I really like this one!

I appreciate the artist's abstract allusion to Michael Jackson's famous "up-on-his-toes" dance move, and the play on words with Heel (of dance shoes or dancing feet) vs. Heal the World. Both artistic genre's, dance and sculpture, feed the soul and are therapeutic to both "do" and "observe" , and therefore have healing properties for us sometimes- downtrodden humans. Certainly Micheal Jackson would have loved to have a memorial to him include a space for children to climb, dance and play on.

The sculpture makes me feel uncomfortable. it is a nice piece of art but does not refer to real site specific, which elavates a sculpture from a meaningless object into a contextual idea.

In a time plagued by economic crisis, modern warfare, and global suffering, it’s hard to consider anything outside of society’s present concerns. In a place stricken by poverty, hate crimes, and overwhelmed by shattered dreams and seemingly impossible-to-overcome obstacles, feelings of “love,” “healing,” and “desire” are somewhat obsolete. While the shadows of these problems may be an indication of the pain felt by millions of people across the world, the life of just one man offered enough hope to shine through to the masses. That man was Michael Jackson, and that light was his music. In an attempt to architecturally commemorate the legacy that was Michael Jackson, one must first attempt to conceive the unparalleled magnitude and undying effect that his music has and will continue to have on future generations to come. Although his voice has been heard in literally every corner of the world, his soul has extended far beyond the depths of life, now immortalized through the medium of song and performance. The site of his Live Forever monument is located within a government-subsidized housing neighborhood in Los Angeles, California, the city where Michael Jackson spent his last living days. With close proximity to Hollywood, the show business and entertainment Mecca of the modern world, this specific alternative provides significant rationale for the caring and humbled character that personified his life and his music. Furthermore, with this monumental structure set in a community under strife, the inhabitants can envision the feelings of “love,” “healing” and “desire” through the monument in order to facilitate community interaction and development. The nature of the memorial is meant to embody his dynamism as both an artist and a human being. The sleek, smooth, but powerful design is intended to simultaneously engage its surroundings while promising to revitalize the community. With the use of a monochromatic material palate, galvanized steel, granite, and concrete, the form’s appearance is all encompassing and thereby signifies the equality that so much of his music promoted. The star-shaped foundation is self-explanatory, but the 7 steps leading up to main figure are meant to represent each of the continents, symbolizing his global reign as the King of Pop. While his ambitions were unbound by limits, what grounded Michael as an individual was his ability to reach out to the hearts and souls of everybody, regardless of their background. His willingness to educate others about “healing the world” is depicted through an array of arms, of which would each be connected to significant words selected from his lyrics. The circulation of water, which would flow down the planes of the star, is synonymous to his natural charisma that under laid everything he touched. His life and music served as an immanent inspiration, and while his body is now at rest his soul will continue to Dream for himself and many others.

This design just have nothing to do with MJ, in my opinion is advancing your creativity more than interpreting and celebrating MJ creativity. As a sculpture itself it's interesting, but I just don't feel that it was honestly trying to speak about him, his work, and what he really represented for millions of people. btp

i love the design and your sympathetic viewpoint of today's hardships. however, i dont understand how this monument portrays or poses any solutions to any of our modern-day global challenges, like feeding hungry children, one of michaels biggest concerns. i thoroughly enjoy the creative design, but the logistics of dealing with crisis, warfare, and suffrage just aren't there.

This design has the most honest and positive intentions. It represents what michael stood for, bringing people together. The simplicity and flexibility of the design also gives it the potential to be executed on multiple sites, in multiple neighborhoods. The participatory aspect of the design makes it a space where people can gather. People can move and play with the arms that reach out.

Although at first glance the connection between the concept of "Heal The World" and the artist's visual design is abstract and enigmatic , so was the life and art of Michael Jackson. The somber tones and mono chromatic shades of tenament gray speak to the sadder elements in a life that sprung from such hardship and, through celebrity and fame, ended in a sad isolation and ultimately tragedy. The artist senses the morre tragic aspects of his personal life and its paralells in these times, yet holds some promise for the innate idealism and goodness in the man and his dream to make the world a better place.
