Rather then creating a new venue to memorialize the King of Pop, this proposal argues for an integrated memorial that is accessible and part of daily life. Michael Jackson Boulevard takes a traditional stance of renaming to remember into the formal realm by transforming a city street into an interactive street scape where people can play dance based video games as a way to learn, interact, and remember.

Destined for the Moon

Michael Jackson will forever walk the Hall of Fame, walk into people's lives, and especially, “walk the moon”. This memorial is a fantastical destination where fans can pilgrimage to and follow his extraordinary career along a media-driven "ribbon" of large LED screens that culminates at a metal statue of Michael. The ribbon represents the twists and turns of his life.  The memorial symbolizes his accomplishments, life story, and most especially, his tremendous impact upon the world of music.

Mt. Rushmore – Extension

Moonwalk Tunnel

Inside Detroit’s airport, the tribute brings visitors to the home of Motown. Using the aesthetics of the airport’s tunnel, the tribute heightens existing sensory factors. The tunnel features lights behind sculpted glass which are synchronized to MJ’s music while the new memorial plays off colored lights. In the spirit of the performer, it employs lasers and projections.  These add dynamic qualities to the space. The fragmented imagery displayed reflects the life and public persona of Jackson.

We propose to commemorate the life of such an icon in a similarly appropriate way. The only way to celebrate the legacy of a super star is to in fact create a super star, a permanent and public Never Land Ranch planet. We will establish a star for Michael, visible to us alongside the millions of other stars man has gazed at and mapped for centuries. His body will sit at the center, the intersection, the point, the axis inside an eternal hyperbolic amphitheater.  His body of work will be project onto screens large enough to be visible from earth forever entertaining billions.

‘1 World Trade Center’, must return to its former name ‘The Freedom Tower”, memorializing the losses from the 9/11 terrorist attacks AND one of the greatest symbols of American freedom - Michael Jackson. He represents everything the terrorists despise about the West, and there is no better way to say ‘we love freedom and we love Jackson’, than a 1km high gold statue of him with anti-terrorist laser scanning/disintegration rays from his eyes.

Pop Ring

The Pop Ring is an alternative to my previous design which I submitted before.This design emphasizes the POP culture.Michael Jackson, being the King of Pop, and high saturated colors representing Pop Art, are the essence of this monument.This design could be constructed out of colored aluminum and LED lighting.The inner skin of the ring acts as a long projection of Michael’s dance moves represented by colored silhouettes.In the center, Michael’s famous glove changes to all of his hand’s gestures.

MJ Public Domain Countdown

The monument is a digital display which counts down to the moment when all of Michael Jacksons’ creative content will enter the public domain. In 70 years when the clock reaches zero it will play Billy Jean on loud speakers, making it the first time the song is played free of copyright.  An online version of the countdown can be seen here. The monument is not location specific, and could be adapted to other venues.
