Michael Jackson was one of the most celebrated musicians of his time and throughout his career, he had a goal: “My goal in life is to give to the world what I was lucky to receive, the ecstasy of divine union through my music and my dance.” I aim to ensure this will continually be met by creating a stage for the world; a piece that represents him. An interactive monument that will truly represent his life’s work and be a piece that brings people together to enjoy his sounds and his movements.

As books, art, and buildings on earth inevitably erode over the centuries, the bootprints left by the astronauts on the moon will likely be the only preserving evidence of intelligent life on Earth. Jackson’s moonwalk strides were measured to create a golden cenotaph that casts a shallow impression similar to the steps Neil Armstrong first took on the moon. While Armstrong’s step verifies the Earth’s scientific progress, Jackson’s memorial serves to commemorate humankind’s cultural triumphs.

This monument demands to be big. In fact, anything we can build is too small. We must instead cover the globe with a monumental network, an event the size of the ideas it monumentalizes. We must also think big temporally. Through drastic alterations to both his body and his art, Michael Jackson defied the limitations of time. His dream was immortality, and he pursued it sincerely. Our monumental event must also survive longer than we can imagine to inspire those not yet born to dream bigger.

Michael Jackson was a transformative artist who wanted to live forever. His fans know that his spirit will. Renaming the three subway-lines at Hoyt-Schermerhorn in B-A-D is the most subtle and at the same time most dignified honor to MJ and the terrific Bad-video. It wouldn’t be too difficult: A is already there. C and G would have to be swopped with B and D (coincidentally both on the orange line!). Since these two are mostly following the same way (up to the Bronx),they should be renamed anyway: Their letters sound too much the same and are causing misunderstandings in the noisy NYC subway stations.

While many monuments seek to immortalize their subject through form, for our design we chose to use program to fulfill this means. Being grounded to a modern conceptualization of a traditional memorial wall, each of the three platforms houses its own unique program. Through the synergistic interaction of the individual programs a sense of community is developed through the medium of music and performance.

Michael defied this world and sought to open a public’s mind to a place beyond our customs, our rituals, our symbols - our lifestyles. As king of Pop, he used these very things in a creative and progressive way to help us see differently. Now he’s transgressed life itself and so it is only fitting for a memorial to transgress space itself.
Transgression space is in the world of the virtual. It’s a space to keep making - where creative re-appropriation reigns.

I am thinking what is the best place, to remember king of pop. It is not an abadoned place, it must be somewhere in the place with a lot of people- the city of New York (for example, but it can be anywhere else in the world).
I am wondering how would I remember him ( well the statue is something original). I have never met him , but I know his songs, so the words will be ok.
the melody of the songs - I have them in my head forever.
when will I remember him?
... anytime I go to the city

Vacuous Tears questions society’s fascination with Celebrity rather than extolling a specific man. We propose a void with glass test tubes spaced apart on a 1x1 ft grid running the length of the space. We encourage fans to send individual test tubes filled with their tears for MJ. Without followers, Celebrity is but an empty artifice. Our proposal celebrates the follower by exposing the devotion each individual has to a Celebrity but, also questions the power behind their tears.
